SWB: Reducing The Risk
Sebastien Murat gave a tip about reducing the risk for a shallow water blackout during freediving when you come back from the depth. Interesting for everybody.
Here’s a free tip based on some research I’ve been doing, without all the physiological mumbo-jumbo: If you think/sense you’re not going to make it simply remove your mask, pull your hood back somewhat, take off any nose-plug, or whatever is covering your face. This simple act, which you should carry-out as soon as possible upon initiating your ascent, will magnify your O2-conserving dive response when you most need it, thereby reducing the risk of a BO. This technique can also be used to minimize the risk of a BO in the latter part of any static or dynamic dive.
