The Worlds Best Static Breath Holders

wc2007maribor.jpgThe first freedive competitors are already arriving in Maribor. A sign that the start of the competition is close. I’ve done my homework, read the rules over and over again. Everybody is of course coming prepared as it should be, knowing the rules by heart. So when we have the captains meeting at night we can keep the session short, because there will be no questions about the rules. Yeah right!

pool_pistan.jpgOne of the most asked questions is of course who is going to win the competition. The last minute entry of Austria with relative newbie Herbert Nitsch will probably not change to much in the total ranking, or will it? ;) Let’s be honest, there are many competitors entering this competition knowing for sure that they will not make it to the finals. And most of them probably won’t make it, but some of them do make it to the finals because every time in any big competition there will be one big name who will push to much or break some rule, or do the surface protocol in reverse mode. So besides the fact that sometimes people just get disqualified for some reason, who are the athletes with the highest change of winning?

Stig.jpgLet’s start with Men’s static. 66 male freedivers competing. My prediction for the freedivers in the final is; Stig Serverinssen, Christian Maldame, Timo Kinnunen, Deron Verbeck, Herbert Nitsch, Joki Antero, William Winram and Ryuzo Shinomiya. Minimum time to get in the finals will be 7:00 minutes. But I will not be shocked if we see some new eastern europe names in this list instead! There is really something going on over there, so who knows. Too bad Sam Still from the UK is not here to defend his title. My top three consits of:
1. Stig
2. Herbert
3. Timo

carlosnatalia.jpgNext in line are the 33 women freedivers in static. After looking at ranking lists, competition results, the stars and my horoscope I come to the following final list; Natalia Molchanova, Lotta Ericson, Natalia Avseenko, Claudia Rollero, Jessica Wilson, Elisabeth Kristoffersen, Kathryn McPhee and Johanna Nordblad. Minimum time to get in the finals will be 5:45 at least! Also here is the possibility of some hidden talent from eastern countries we don’t really know of yet. My top three for this list is;
johanna_nordblad.jpg 1. Natalia M
2. Jessica
3. Elisabeth

The next days I will publish my anticipated final list about the dynamic disciplines. So what is your guess? Am I missing any big names here? Let me know in the comments and I will take them in consideration and look them up during training to see how they are doing, so I can report my final list the day before static competition.

I think Simo is not participating in WC this year, so probably he will not be in the finals either. I doubt that Stig can beat Herbert or Timo in competition, but we’ll see about that.

I’d say potential 7 minute breakers (in addition to the mentioned)
    Alex Molchanov
    Timo Jattu
    Mikko Pöntinen
    Guillaume Nery
    Aleš Sliškar
    Miha Pribošič
    Peter Boivie
    Weine Gustavsson
    Per Westin
    Nicolas Guerry
    Carlos Coste

I’d watch out especially for Per, Peter and Carlos. Why Carlos? Well, I have a gut feeling he’s been putting some effort into pool training lately. Just a guess :) The rest of ‘em may offer pleasant surprises.

Hopefully we see some completely unexpected names in the final as well!

Pretty much agree with the top 3 in terms of who, not necessarily the order :) In top 5 we might see some surprise names already!

Stig has the potential to win, but then again, his consistency in static has not always been great.

Shame that we don’t have more of the big guns for static…I’d like to see Sam Still, Tom Sietas, Wolle, Eric F and especially Karl Pernett. And Mifsud! Come on, if even Apnea Academy is back in terms with AIDA, he should be back too! It’s a new era, time to let go of old grudges.

    Oh, forgot Kars!

Very consistent 6:30+ man – with a little good wind, definately in the finals.

Well I was thinking about keeping it secret, but it’s uplifting to get noted! I;ll work to get in tune and surpass finally the 7. I’ve worked on strength, stamina, flexibility and technique for dynamic, I know that it also works through in static.

Today I’m very tired, and still much to do before departure!

It’s going to be intresting, I’ll try my best to make it into the Final(s) I Indeed missed narrowly last time in 2005.

    See you down there!

Damn.. small mistake. Replaced him with william winram, also a 7 min man.

I could say that this was a test to see if the visitors of this site are really paying attention. Would you believe that? ;)

Interesting list! About Carlos; 6:18 in his last comp without wetsuit… yes very good possible.

Indeed too bad about all those other big numbered guys missing…

  7. June 29th, 2007 at 11:16 | #7

I looked him up in the ranking and the only time above 6:30 and white card was in may 2005 6:38. After that a best time of 6:28 in 2006 and for 2007 I can’t find any info. His personal record is 6:50 in march 2005 and he hasn’t broke it since. But who knows… If he gets a white card he can make it far.

  8. June 30th, 2007 at 17:32 | #8

Good luck! Hope you set a new national record…It’s been a while for static.
