2nd Trophy City of Peace

Last weekend there was an excellent dress rehearsal for the world championships taking place in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Riccardo Mura and the ‘Only One’ Freediving Team (part of Apnea Academy Egypt) thought of every detail and organized a great competition called the 2nd Trophy City of Peace.

sara_campbell.jpgThere were a bunch of national records broken and once again Sara Campbell was there to impress. She did a 40 meter constant no fins dive but she still thinks her technique sucks and can be improved big time. The other UK national record she made was a 70 meter constant weight dive in a time of 2:43 minutes. What an improvement in such short time period, she now really is one of the worlds best constant weight women out there. Federico Mana did a 52 meter constant without fins Italian national record and Andrea Zuccari did a 42 meter constant without fins Swiss national record.

peter_pedersen.jpgThe safety was also tested properly. William Trubridge managed to do an excellent 75 meters without fins dive on the second day, but on the first day he had a blackout. Peter Pedersen really wanted to get the Danish/Nordic/Scandinavian constant weight record on his name that is currently in the hands of Timo Jattu from Denmark with a depth of 90 meters. So Peter tried a 91 meter dive but had a big blackout at 18 meters depth, which is pretty serious. After that he was prohibited to compete in the rest of the competition. Too bad for him. Well, if someone takes Timo’s 90 meter record, Timo is ready to take it back immediately. Training is going well for him and he’s already hitting 3 digit numbers.

So Timo is already below the 100m mark? Wow, that is massive, the elite club of “below 100″ is getting crawded!

4 locals, 6 succesful dives and 4 NRs.
    5 foreigners… 1 successful dive (my 75m CNF)
Sharm has beautiful clear, deep waters close to shore, but the conditions may not be ideal for max attempts: 43ºC air and 31ºC water are too hot for freediving, and dives that anywhere else are fairly straightforward become difficult here. Low BP due to the hot climate is the main culprit, and the diet at the resort restaurant doesn’t help. Several people nearly had packing blackouts at half max packs…
The organisation is impeccable, and I think it will be an incredible world championships, as long as everyone assesses carefully the effect of the conditions on the performance. Hopefully the water should have cooled down to something more manageable (28ºC), and the organiser was talking about working with the resort to create a menu more appropriate for athletes.
Rumours also of Umberto Pelizzari attending the last few days and closing ceremony…

Great competition in Sharm, but the heat seemed to be the problem… I had done a pretty deep one in Dahab a couple of days before, and felt convinced that I had the 91m in me. -I know…Excuses :-) BUT never the less..
To add a small correction to the text about the comp, I was NOT prohibited to start on the second day… I had my flight home, so that is why I didn’t start. IF I had had a later departure, I guess that I would not have started anyway, but I was not prohibited to start…

-Timo below 100??? Interesting! I’m more than sure that he is able to do so, but where has he done it??? And where did you get these info???
