Christian Redl's Cave Dive

christian redl caveYou can say whatever you want about Christian Redl, but he gets to do some cool stuff and has some good sponsors. Christian Redl is known within the community as being the full time professional freediver who’s doing all kind of freediving stunts and events that are not AIDA disciplines related, like his ‘under ice hockey world championships’. He is so famous for this, and sometimes even being ridiculed, that if someone is doing a ”freediving record attempt”, (like doing a deep constant weight dive with a scooter in his pink swimming trunks, and claiming that that is a new world record with the help of some heavy marketing and media attention) that within the freediving community freedivers call it ”doing a redl”.

All in all, most of us are sitting at home and Christian is traveling the world doing all kinds of nice projects. I guess his self-branding after all these years is starting to really pay off. On September 28th he completed his cave freediving project in Angelita, Mexico by doing a dive to the bottom at 60 meters. It took him 1:46 min to do the dive. Nowadays 60 meters is not that deep in freediving competitions, but as long as you play the marketing part right, it seems you can still get loads of attention by doing it an a cave or some other special place. Oh, and there was a slight angle in the cave, so the distance to the bottom was 70 meters.

Below is a clip of the project. And later this month a complete documentary will be published.
